Originally established through the bequest of fashion designer Jacques Doucet, the library has acquired numerous manuscripts and rare works over the decades. It extends beyond historical writings, with contemporary authors continuing to enrich the collections. Despite the richness of its literary heritage, the library has faced controversies regarding the management of its collections, including allegations of document disappearances and mismanagement of legacies. Several inspections were conducted, leading to conservatory measures and an administrative closure in October 2022. The inspection report from February 2023 resulted in the appointment of a provisional administrator to ensure the reorganization and reopening of this emblematic institution.
